Am i allowed to keep having so many “NEW FAVOURITE BANDS”!? oh well - i can’t help it.

The Main Drag. So good. Such a good show! Watch that video, it’s amazing!

I would like to discuss this further, but actually I should sleep.

Festival success. I am so super happy. Thanks to everyone that came out. You’re awesome!

Hi! Today was such nice day, and it’s not even over yet!
Local 510 hosted a wonderful Hangover Breakfast, and it was awesome!
The Paperbacks, Hot Panda, Someone Else (sorry!) and Githead played!
A) i am not going to talk about the Paperbacks anymore because I’m creeping even myself out (they were so good and great and perfect! they’ll be back in august!)

B) GITHEAD! WHAT! I am amazed, and I have a new favourite band! So good - such a great show!

C) Hot Panda has their own hot sauce! How do I go about getting my own hot sauce?! I think i could probably make a pretty good one. It would be pretty hot, but also sort of sweet. Next year, mark my words, there will be a Sled Island Hot Sauce. I am going to make it happen.

D) what are you doing tonight? Here is what I think you should do. Mix and Match to make your own Festival Adventure!

*The MAIN DRAG at the Lord Nelson! (have you been there yet? I stopped in last night and felt amazed! It was so weird and rad in there. I think i will go there tonight for sure!)(Plus, the Main Drag is awesome!)(!!)

Yesterday ruled. A point form break down, because I just tried to write normal sentences and it wasn’t working for me this morning.

*bought a deck of Magic cards. What.

*ate lunch in the sun on the Broken City patio, and we all had our Sleduals (Sled Island Schedules, but all made into one word, get it?)(i made that one up, good one, i know) with us, planning and replanning our days

*went to the mall in a car and learned about Michael Jackson. Sad. Had a singalong while driving and blasting “man in the mirror”.

*met up with random internet strangers back on the Broken City patio, lots of out of towners who i’ve never actually hung out with, had a few drinks there, then walked to the Bamboo to see Swords. Did not end up watching Swords, because I was sidetracked by beer, but they sure sounded good from the other room!

*regarding the Out of Towners, my heart filled with Calgary Pride to see these people texting and calling people back home wherever they were from to say how much fun Calgary is and how great the festival is and how much fun they’re having! Seriously! I was just like, beaming! I’m in love with you, Calgary! Good work so far this weekend, you are doing great!

*quickly zoomed over to Dickens Pub to see the Paperbacks, who crowned themselves Kings Of Sled Island, because they’ve played all 3 years! They are my favourite band in the world. Best vibes ever, and that voice! Oh my!

*After the Paperbacks I was somehow transported to the Legion, where Andrew WK pretty much destroyed everybody in that place in the best way. Torn apart by awesomness. He is…I don’t even know. I feel speechless. The show was amazing, and Andrew is an amazing performer. I am so glad I was up front for it, even though the sweat and beer and clear whiskey (!!?) made my hair curly and mascara run, and i got whammed by crazy fans so hard that today I have a giant bruise and sore ribs, it was so worth it!

*met Narduar and fell in love. I’m not even joking - he has an amazing thing going on! This is where things become blurry, either out of the fullness of my heart, or because I had way too many Pilsners, but my night ended dreamily, with a 3am walk home with great pals, bumping in to people on the way, bumping into more people and getting hotdogs, great laughs, secret confessions, the best weather, and perfect perfectness.

Today I’m excited to be alive! The Olympic Plaza show will be amazing! I am going to spend lots of my day there, with a quick duck out around 5pm to get over to Tubby Dog to see Monotonix (Try to picture it please. Monotonix. Tubby Dog. Monotonix. Tubby Dog. MONOTONIX! TUBBY DOG!!!!) and then I am just going with the flow.

Life is good. This City and this Festival and this Whole Thing. Love it.

So, The first “official” Sled Island day was pretty ...

So, The first “official” Sled Island day was pretty much the funnest day I’ve had all year. (i take that back, i’ve had one other day that was a little bit funner, but still!)

In the daytime, I stopped in at the Uptown meet up with Zak, and holy - the Factory Party People were working so hard, and the place looked amazing! I felt a little bit sad that I wasn’t going to be attending the Factory Party, but then I remembered how much other awesome stuff I would be seeing.

Zak & Jenny & I took Andrew WK to a little patio for some drinks, and then I came home and got ready for a Keg Party at Ben’s which was so fun. They had hotdogs, poutine, and jellybeans! And beer!

After the Keg Party, we came back downtown and everyone went to the Factory Party, but I went to Vern’s to see the Superfantastics. Holy! Crap! They were so cute and good! And the vibe in Vern’s is just perfect. All these little guys running around!

After that we walked over to the Bamboo to see what was going on, but I forget what happened there. I was sidetracked.

Then we walked to the Ship for SNFU, and it was so packed and loud and fun! I was feeling quite exhausted, so I only stayed for a bit and then took off!

Today is Thursday, and My Favourite Band In The World is playing tonight at Dickens! The Paperbacks! Seriously so good! With Ladyhawk & Hot Little Rocket, I am so excited for this.

And then we all (that includes you!) must run over to the Legion around 11:30pm, because our minds will be blown. Trust me.

Tonight’s the big night! The third annual Sled Island Poster Show.

Have you ever been to one of these? You’ll go crazy. So good. You should go.

Tonight (tuesday June 23) 6pm, at the Artlife Gallery, 1314 1st Street SW. If you can’t make it tonight, you can check it out until the 27th.

Artists like Drew Ng, Justin LaFontaine, Josh Holinaty, and my beloved Anna Coe have created, from what I hear, “the most amazing posters so far ever!” (those may have not been the exact words, but basically you get the idea.)

Tons of other artists, amazing rock show posters, super art gallery, rad CIRCA dudes, fun times hanging out, and the perfect kickoff to the rest of the week, which I actually sort of feel like throwing up about. But that’s a whole other blog!

Yesterday Zak, Shawn & I drove to L.A. for this mini Sled...

Yesterday Zak, Shawn & I drove to L.A. for this mini Sled Island South party - a bunch of bands in Lethbridge, Alberta threw this sort of “kick off” party thing, and we saw the greatest bands ever! Lethbridge is my new favourite place on Earth.

All of the bands last night were amazing, but my two Twylights were The New Danger Kids, and The Square Waves.

You can catch The New Danger Kids on Friday Night at the Plaza in Kensington - an All Ages show! And you can catch The Square Waves on Saturday night at the Lord Nelson (wtf is the Lord Nelson? I don’t know either, but I’m finding out and going, seriously.) at 9pm!

Please please please, check out these bands, they’re such a breath of fresh awesome air! Also - plan a weekend road trip this summer with your friends and go to Lethbridge. That place has the best vibe in the world. Seriously. Seriously.

So, Pictionary was superfun last night - great turnout, and instead of one pass, we ended up giving away two! You should have been there!
The lucky winners, Ben Leon and a cute girl named Nikola, managed to draw the most items on Megan & I’s pre-made list of random items, and they were both such great players we couldn’t bear to not award them both!
In other news, have you seen the Sled Island Program Guide yet? It’s that hot pink little magazine that is everywhere with all the FFWD’s and stuff? It turned out really super this year, thanks to Megan and Jesse and Shawn and their 39 hour work day! I’m not even joking about that - they honestly worked for that long in one sitting!
If you pick up a copy of that cute little thing, you can tear out the middle section (the pull-out schedule!) and that’s how you know where you should be and when! But read it carefully! There is so much happening! And say you want to see two or three different things on the same night, all at different venues, just look a little harder, and maybe/probably you will be able to find one of those bands playing a different night somewhere else, so the world is all great and good!

I’m getting excited. One week to go!

HEY! Twylog!

How are you? I haven’t posted for about a week, but I have 2 really important things to tell you tonight!

a) I got cable TV installed today! I haven’t left the couch since about 9am! I am so happy! I am learning so many things, and I haven’t even changed the channel!

b) I’m going to break this down into the 5 W’s.
WHO: YOU, ME, & MEGAN PATERSON.

WHAT: PICTIONARY THROW DOWN!

WHERE: BROKEN CITY PATIO

WHEN: TUESDAY JUNE 17th, 8PM

WHY: WE ARE GIVING AWAY A free SLED ISLAND PASS! (you have to beat us at Pictionary in order to get it)

You know how Zak & Shawn have been giving passes away to whoever can beat them at “Magic” or Buck Hunter, well - Megan and I would like to include all of you normal people with something that is actually FUN to play!

So! Tuesday Night! Broken City Patio! You vs. Us. I haven’t thought about the rest of the rules yet, or how exactly I need you to win, but don’t worry. It’ll be awesome. Here is a picture of me and Zak from last night! We all worked hard all day on stuff, and then went out to celebrate in our city, this new bar that opened called Local 510. It is going to be awesome there, and a very nice addition to Calgary!

Another thing that is going to be a very nice addition to Calgary is this band that’s coming called the Superfantastics! When I hear them, I feel so happy because they’re so cute and good! They will be playing somewhere with someone, but I don’t know who or where because nobody tells me stuff like that because I have let cats out of bags too early sometimes, and I ruin surprises. When the schedule gets posted, I think that should be soon, find out where and when these guys are playing, and make sure you’re there. I have a good feeling about this one!

Good evening, Blog!

Outside of my window right now it sounds like someone is being killed, but I’m too tired to get up and check, plus i have a few important blog-things to discuss.

first, i have to tell you something sad, but not super sad. The Dudes are not playing Sled Island this year. They were going to, but now they are not going to. This is sad because they are one of my favourite bands, but not so sad because whatever. We can see the Dudes anytime! (CD Release Party - really soon, at the legion!) (not a Sled Island Related thing, but I’m still super pumped about it.) I forget where i was going with this….Oh yeah, so i have to pick a new band to fill my Dudes Hole in my Top 5. So…I choose…THE PAPERBACKS!

the Paperbacks are from Winnipeg. I love them.

And next on my list of things to blog about is how excited I am about a project I’m working on right now! The fine folks over at Canada Disc are putting out a CD featuring 20 or so of the bands playing at Sled Island this year, and so I’m designing the cover and the inside and stuff. That’s not what’s exciting though - I just got the track listing, and the CD is going to be dope. (dope?!) It’s got Black Mold, The Cripple Creek Fairies, Kisses of Fire, Mount Analogue, The Sub-linguals…and so many other awesome bands!

Totally try to get your hands on one of those discs. Even if you don’t like the songs, at least it’s guaranteed to look cute! Ting!

Hi!

Sorry I haven’t updated for so long - I’ve been busy drawing pictures of viking bunnies, and recording lots of funny/unfunny podcasts! Did you listen to them yet? Drew is afraid of kittens, and Craig always has to go to the bathroom!

How was your long weekend? Did you go to the Flemish Eye Ball? I heard it was awesome!

I don’t really have any big news right now, I just wanted to let you know that I am still here, and keep checking back, because as soon as I have time to let out secrets, I will be letting them out. Right here. Secrets. Letting the cat out of the bag. Or, in Drew’s case, the kitten out of the basket.

You guys! Hi!
My very own Sled Island Blog! Brilliant, I know!

So, big day today, for many reasons!

First, the press conference at Broken City. A handful of bands were announced, and the line up this year is the bomb. (i have never said “the bomb” in my life, so you know it must be awesome!)

Since this is my blog and I can type what I want, I am going to be a little bit selfish here and do a list of my top 5 bands that I am excited about from the list of bands announced today.

TOP 5 BANDS I AM EXCITED ABOUT FROM THE LIST OF BANDS ANNOUNCED TODAY.

1) Andrew WK
Um. Remember a few years ago when he came here and played that DJ set? Yeah. I am still feeling shivery from that show. It was amazing. He just fills the room with this awesome vibe, and you stand there feeling more awesome than you’ve felt for a long time. I’m serious. Seriously serious.

2) The Coathangers
Oh whaaaaaat. I had never heard of the Coathangers before today, and then I did some internetting, and oh my God. So good. Basically exactly my favourite kind of sound. And a song called “Stop Stomp Stompin’” which is a great title, in my opinion.

3) The Bronx
obviously.

4) The Dudes
Calgary’s own little hometown heroes. I am absolutely in love with the Dudes. A Dudes show in Calgary always feels like the Olympic Opening Ceremonies - a sweet layer of awesome excitement draped nicely on top of the crowd, and everyone floats home happy and swooning. And what’s even better is that nobody has to wear those goofy blue outfits like the people wore at the opening ceremonies for the ‘88 Calgary Olympics.

5) Hollerado
Hollerado has a song called “Fake Drugs” that will make you shit your pants. In the good way. Honestly.

Hey! Another reason why today was a pretty big day at Sled Island HQ is because we launched the new website today! I’m pretty excited about it, I think it looks great and is a little easier to find stuff. User Friendlier.

Ok! Well.This blog is essentially going to be the best thing ever, so keep checking back for the inside scoop (what does that even mean?) on all things Sled Island!
